They’ll feature the “family” prepping for and chowing down on some mussels linguine, as well as a nice dinner party scene with all sorts of great mussels-related apps [yes I ate a lot!]. The website with the new videos should be up soon!

Kind of sounds like the title of a college class or something doesn’t it? Well, what I’m talking about here is this: The number of TV shows with voiceover narration has risen in recent years. There was Sex in the City and Pushing Daisies, and My Name is Earl, and now there’s Grey’s, Scrubs, Desperate Housewives, and Gossip Girl, just to name a few. Some work well. Some don’t. Regardless, the voiceover is a great way to connect to the audience, hitting themes and driving home a key message in sometimes not-so-subtle ways.

Dexter is currently my top pick if prime time shows that incorporate the use of voiceover. It uses narration to tell us the lead character’s – Dexter’s – thoughts. I think that works really well because you get inside Dexter’s head, and that’s part of the point of the series. It’s a device that’s clearly worked in literature forever, so why not TV? But I’ll save that discussion for when I teach a college class.

So listen- I am fully aware that I’m a voice-over guy and that I usually blog about how fun it is to talk out loud for money. BUT! I cannot contain myself any longer. I just have to say it: THANK YOU BIG BROTHER! I also must echo Josh Wolk, the fantastically talented writer from Entertainment Weekly, and say “God bless you, crazy bastards. God bless you!” Each summer I look forward to the utterly crap-tastic voyeur-ific train wreck that is BB. And despite feeling slightly dumber with every hour [I'm certain that brain cells die in direct proportion with episodes watched-- For reals yo! Michelle told me, and she's a "scientist" who works seven days a week isolating the sugar component of a protein], I’m left with a certain, well, satisfaction. You know when you eat too much turkey at Thanksgiving dinner and you feel a strange melange of content, shame and sleepiness? Well that’s how I feel after BB: it’s Tryptophan Television!

[To check out Josh Wolk’s BB11 TV Watch column go to EW online click on TV Watch and look for the BB11 updates following Thursday’s live eviction.

Are you falling in love with the voice of your car’s GPS (global positioning satellite)? Well, maybe “love” is too strong a word but perhaps you’ve taken a special interest in the particular voices that your GPS offers? [A friend of mine has a female British voice which I know he loves.]

Anyway, I got to thinking about the voice talent behind a GPS system, which quickly transported me back to the glory days of the original Knight Rider TV series (1982-1986) and the best talking car ever: KITT (voiced by William Daniels).

If I had a GPS in my car [I'd have to retire the retro CD/cassette combo first] I’d definitely want one featuring the talents of voice actor William Daniels providing turn-by-turn directions in KITT’s original voice. http://www.knightridergps.com/

“KITT?” “Yes Michael…err, I mean Shawn?” “To the Liquor Store!” “Very well, since you insist.”

There’s no surer sign of summer than Big Brother http://www.cbs.com/primetime/big_brother/ . There’s nothing guilty about the pleasure I take in BB (now in its eleventh season). This is junk-TV that always ends up revealing a lot about how people behave in groups, with cameras trained on them 24/7. And those revelations often surprise the players themselves as much as they do voyeur viewers like me. But, hey, this isn’t a reality TV blog, so what’s my angle?! Well, let me ask you this: who’s the voice of BB?

The most recent “voice” of Big Brother is Clayton Halsey http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0357022/. There have been several different announcers on the American BB on CBS throughout the years: Dave Walsh (BB1), Chuck Riley(BB2) and Phil Proctor (BB3-6).

I wouldn’t classify Halsey as a voice actor per se, but he most certainly is an off-camera announcer with a unique vocal style and delivery. The announcer role is to provides some vocal continuity mainly in the episode intros and outros. His VOs remind us how that it’s “day 22 in the Big Brother House” and that there are “52 cameras and 80 microphones capturing every move and sound.” You occasionally hear some other short pick-ups and “calls to action” throughout each episode. [“America- Which house guest do you want to see get a…”.

Apparently, Halsey’s first duty is as the show’s chief editor, so he’s obviously a multi-talented showbiz guy. But as far as his announcing duties go- Let’s face it, reading out loud isn’t all that difficult.

I might be asked to create a “character voice” to infuse life into a script, but I book the majority of my gigs because the agency and client really like my “regular” voice [which isn't really regular at all!]. Voice actors are also known as voice talents, voice overs, voice over artists, VO, VA, narrators, announcers, and so on.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. How can I afford to have such a range of footwear from which to select? Well relax. When I was booked as the voice for a popular Dairy, I simply borrowed a pair of gently used Hunter Original Green “Wellies”. It was the boots that set the tone for the perfect read.

So, next time you listen to one of my VOs, try to guess what I’m wearing on my feet.

I provided live announcer duties for the awards portion of the evening, and was booked as the “VOG,” a popular yet little know voice industry term for “Voice of God.” A tall order wouldn’t you say? Especially considering that it was voice legend Don LaFontaine (1940-2008) http://www.donlafontaine.com/ who earned that moniker [along with others including "thunder throat"]. Arguably the best VO guy of our time, Lafontaine became identified with the phrase “In a world…”, which has been used in movie trailers so frequently that it has become a cliche, but I digress. Anyway, I did my best to channel the VOG, and ended up with my own version [think "Hal Douglas" meets "Kasey Casem"] which seemed to please the client. “And the Nominees are…”
